DFM fuel flow meters Now calculate CO₂ emissions

Calculate CO₂ Emissions for tractor, truck, diesel generator, ship

The functionality of DFM, DFM D, and DFM Marine fuel flow meters has been expanded to include real-time CO₂ emissions calculation. This new feature is available for models equipped with CAN J1939/S6 and RS-485 interfaces.

This update is particularly relevant for projects that require carbon footprint monitoring and compliance with international environmental standards.

How CO₂ emission calculation works

  1. The flow meter accurately measures fuel consumption in the engine’s fuel lines.
  2. Using the measured fuel volume and a specified CO₂ emission factor (default value: 2.670 kg CO₂ per litre of diesel fuel), it calculates the amount of CO₂ emitted. This coefficient is adjustable via the service program to accommodate different fuel types and compositions.
  3. The calculated CO₂ emission data is accessible through Modbus RTU and SAE J1939 + S6 protocols, facilitating easy integration into onboard telematics systems and analytical platforms.

Why is the emission factor of 2.670 kg CO₂ per liter of diesel used?

The default CO₂ emission factor of 2.670 kg CO₂ per litre of diesel fuel is based on international standards and scientific assessments that consider the chemical composition and density of diesel fuel. This value represents an average emission factor for standard diesel fuel, aligning with data from various authoritative sources.

For instance, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reports a CO₂ emission factor of approximately 10.19 kg per U.S. gallon of diesel fuel, which equates to about 2.69 kg per litre. Similarly, other sources indicate values in the range of 2.63 to 2.68 kg CO₂ per litre, depending on fuel quality and composition.

By adopting a default value of 2.670 kg CO₂ per litre, DFM fuel flow meters provide a reliable and standardized basis for CO₂ emissions calculation, while allowing users the flexibility to adjust the coefficient to match specific fuel characteristics.
