Remote Control of Units and Assemblies of Complex Machines

Remote control of equipment fleet

Many vehicles and stationary installations operate in remote locations that are hard—or sometimes impossible—to reach in person. Nevertheless, the engine, components, and systems of these machines can be remotely controlled.

Examples of remote control applications:

  • Starting or stopping a diesel generator installed at a hard-to-reach site.
  • Engine immobilization to prevent theft or unauthorized use of a vehicle.
  • Shutting down faulty industrial equipment to prevent accidents.

Technoton offers a solution for remote control of machines and equipment. The operator controlling the equipment sends commands through a telematics service or via SMS from a smartphone. The commands are received and executed by the CANUp telematics gateway, MasterCAN DAC digital-to-analog converter, and electromechanical actuators.

Benefits of implementing remote control:

  • time and resource savings — reduction in the number of trips to remote sites,
  • control equipment anytime, anywhere,
  • improved reliability and productivity,
  • safety — reduced risk for personnel, especially in dangerous or hard-to-reach locations,
  • prevention of emergency situations and serious breakdowns,
  • prevention of unauthorized use of equipment,
  • optimization of fuel and electricity consumption, reduction of CO2 emissions.

Remote control of components and systems of stationary objects

CANUp telematics gateway, installed on-site, receives a command via telematics service or SMS. Depending on the equipment type, either—or sometimes both—of the following methods is used.

  1. CANUp transmits the command to the object’s controller via the RS-485 Modbus RTU digital interface. The controller executes the command.
  2. CANUp transmits the command via the CAN J1939/71 digital interface to MasterCAN DAC digital-to-analog converter, which generates an analog or discrete control signal and sends it to the object’s actuator (relay, starter, servo drive).

Remote control capabilities:

  • switching on and off pumps in fuel supply systems of stationary machines,
  • starting and stopping the engine of a diesel generator set,
  • controlling a diesel generator set/diesel power plant controller: connecting load, starting the diesel power plant in “test” mode,
  • controlling lighting, ventilation, heating of buildings and industrial facilities.

Remote control of engine, components, and systems of vehicles

CANUp telematics gateway installed on a vehicle, after receiving a command, generates CAN J1939 message addressed to a digital-to-analog converter. The converter transforms the message received from the gateway into a discrete output control signal. Based on the discrete signal, the electromagnetic relay opens or closes the control circuit of the component or system.

Remote control capabilities:

  • blocking engine start in case of a truck or tractor theft,
  • removing engine lock when the threat of theft has passed,
  • engine shutdown in case of unauthorized use of a vehicle,
  • emergency shutdown of a machine’s component or system.
