Uninterrupted power supply is critical for reliable operation of many systems and entire industries. When the stationary electrical grid goes down, backup power sources like diesel generators are utilized. Usually, start and stop of these backup generators are automatic, but failures can occur. In such situations, remote control of generators using CANUp 27 Genset gateways is a valuable solution.
How does remote control of diesel generators work using CANUp gateways?
For safe remote start/stop of an engine and connecting/disconnecting a load of a generator set, an operator simply needs to send commands via SMS or a server request to CANUp 27 Genset gateway, which issues control commands through Modbus RTU interface of a controller. Additionally, such commands can be used to reset errors on the control panel.
The “plug-and-play” solution is compatible with widely used controllers, including ComAp and DATACOM, through RS-485 protocol (Modbus). We are expanding our list of controllers that are compatible by default. Integration with a controller of any brand is possible; simply provide a Modbus register map to the Technical Department at Technoton.
Remote control of diesel generator sets within UNUM Genset system
Diesel generator sets are often located far away, making their maintenance and monitoring expensive. With UNUM Genset, technical specialists no longer need to travel to the site to manage and monitor generators, saving time and money.
UNUM Genset includes software, additional fuel sensors, and bus readers, providing real-time monitoring of generators status (running/stopped), as well as monitoring over 300 electrical, fuel, temperature, and other useful parameters.
UNUM Genset can automatically generate reports on generator usage efficiency, send SMS notifications to an operator about errors, emergencies, important events, and fuel fraud, either on demand or according to a schedule.
*As of the writing of this article, the ability to control diesel generator sets through the internet via the UNUM Genset interface was under testing.
