Data converters for vehicle and industrial telematics

Quite often, it is necessary to grab operation parameters from standard machinery sensors to vehicle or industrial telematics system.

How to get that data? Use MasterCAN data converters!

Data converters for transport and industrial telematics

Purpose of use of MasterCAN converters

MasterCAN converters read messages from on-board data buses of vehicles (J1939, J1708, ISObus) and industrial machines (RS-232, RS-485 – Modbus), and then convert messages into interfaces used by a terminal unit – telematics devices, GPS tracker, display.

Scheme: integrating CAN J1939, J1708, RS-232/485 vehicle devices using a converter

MasterCAN V-Gate
Inputs – J1939/71 + ISObus and J1708 (Volvo, Renault, John Deer), outputs – J1939/71 and RS-232 (Modbus RTU, ASCII). It is used with terminal devices without a J1708-port or when it is required to filter out FMS messages from the general array of parameters in a CAN bus.

MasterCAN C232
Converts J1939/71 to RS-232/485 Modbus RTU or ASCII text. It is used for terminal devices without available (or even not equipped with) CAN port.

MasterCAN V-Gate and C232 allows generating a cumulative fuel consumption counter for vehicles that do not have “Total fuel used” parameter in CAN bus, but do have SPN 183 – hourly consumption.

MasterCAN RS2CAN
Inputs – RS-232 or RS485 (Modbus RTU), output – CAN j1939/S6. Allows integrating operation data into a telematics system from a genset controller or other device with Modbus RTU protocol available

MasterCAN RS2CAN
Input – CAN J1939/S6, output – RS485 (Modbus RTU). Allows sending data from additional sensors (level, volume, etc.) of the telematics system to genset’s controller or other device with Modbus RTU.

Flexible configuration of MasterCAN

Converter (adapter) MasterCAN сonfiguring

MasterCAN V-Gate and C232 converters require almost no configuration (except for selecting the type of output message, baud rate, and a few others) since they work with standard protocol specifications J1939/71 and J1708.

The main feature of configuring MasterCAN RS2CAN and CAN2RS is the ability to select a specific message for search/reading and a specific message into which you want to convert the received data. This allows you to flexibly configure the MasterCAN converter to receive and transfer 100 machinery operation parameters to a telematics system. The devices can recognize 10,000+ various CAN parameters.

Summary

  1. Versatility for vehicles – reading all available J1939/71 standard parameters;
  2. Flexible configuration — easy selection of input and output messages;
  3. Creating a cumulative fuel consumption counter based on engine fuel rate data from SPN 183;
  4. CAN interface supports 10,000+ possible J1939/71 and ISObus protocol messages;
  5. Can work in “active requests” mode, as well as in “sniffer” and “hidden” modes;
  6. Simple and user-friendly service software for configuration, detailed technical documentation.
