DIESEL FLOW METERS FOR TRUCKS

There are several ways of fuel consumption monitoring of trucks. We will not consider using consumption quotas, since this method is only suitable for rough estimation of resource consumption and does not provide accurate information on actual fuel usage.

Today, vehicle fleets use two methods to control fuel consumption:

  • Direct measurement using diesel flow meters
  • Calculating fuel consumption using level changes in tank data (fuel level monitoring)

Fuel level monitoring is performed by using either standard fuel level sensors (data from the CAN-bus) or additional fuel level sensors in tanks. Both options are indirect and do not provide sufficient accuracy in all cases.
The main drawbacks of monitoring fuel consumption based on a tank level are a lack of control over fuel draining from the return line and the inability to use it on heavy equipment – due to vibration, uneven and/or short-term engine loading, rough terrain, and slopes.

Hence, the most precise method of fuel consumption monitoring for trucks is by using fuel flow meters.

Advantages of DFM diesel flow meters for trucks

DFM fuel flow meter is a direct measuring device, which means that it measures an actual fuel consumption in engine pipelines.

  • DFM diesel flow meter eliminates hidden fuel drainage from the return line.
  • DFM accuracy does not depend on vehicle operation conditions.
  • DFM allows tracking of fuel consumption in engine load modes including “idle”, “optimal” and “overload”.
  • DFM provides an ability to track a duration of engine operation (engine hours) in each of the load modes.

Fuel consumption monitoring of dump trucks

Fuel consumption monitoring of dump trucks

Dump trucks typically spend much of their time traveling around construction sites and fields. A fuel level in tanks fluctuate, making it difficult to determine the starting and ending points for calculation.
However, fuel flow meters DFM are perfectly suited for this type of equipment – measurement accuracy is not affected by a terrain.

Benefits of using DFM diesel flow meters on dump trucks

  • Accuracy of flow meters does not depend on road relief;
  • Monitoring fuel consumption in “idle”, “optimal”, “overload” modes;
  • Accounting for engine operation time in “idle”, “optimal”, “overload” modes;
  • Fuel system maintenance based on actual usage;
  • Prevention of fuel theft from return line;
  • Detection of fuel system and engine malfunctions based on changes in fuel consumption.

Heavy machinery faces the same difficulties as dump trucks. In addition, heavy machinery operates in a ‘jagged’ rhythm, meaning that an engine load increases and decreases repeatedly.
Also, special machinery may have auxiliary equipment, an operation of which increases fuel consumption and should be taken into account separately.

Monitored parameters and tasks to be solved

  • Instant and total fuel consumption;
  • Fuel consumption of an engine and auxiliary equipment is measured separately;
  • Fuel consumption in supply and return lines;
  • Fuel consumption and engine operating time in “idle”, “optimal”, and “overload” modes;
  • Registration of “Tampering” and “Intervention” events;
  • Determination of fuel consumption rate per unit of work performed;
  • Engine and fuel system diagnostics for preventive maintenance.

Fuel monitoring in fuel trucks

Fuel monitoring on fuel trucks - diesel dispensed and consumed

As fuel tankers are often used to refuel agricultural and construction equipment, they often have to navigate uneven terrain. Additionally, in case of fuel tankers, it’s necessary to monitor a volume of fuel dispensed from a tank, in addition to engine fuel consumption.

Tractor unit monitored parameters

  • Fuel consumption;
  • Engine operating time, both total and by modes;
  • Detection of fuel system and engine malfunctions at early stages of occurrence.

Tank monitored parameters

  • Volume of fuel dispensed from the tank;
  • Registration of attempts to manipulate fuel consumption.

Model range of DFM flowmeters

DFM and DFM D

Single-chamber and differential diesel flow meters with measurement error of 1 – 3% are designed for accurate measurement of fuel consumption in the range of 1 – 600 l/h – small and medium construction and agricultural machinery. Also for monitoring a fuel consumption of auxiliary equipment – refrigeration, steam generator, power, etc.

DFM Marine

Single-chamber diesel flow meters with the range of 20-4,000 l/h are intended for large quarry dump trucks, small tanker trucks, railway equipment, powerful construction machines. Measurement accuracy of ±0.5%.

DFM Industrial

One-chamber flow meters for monitoring fuel consumption in large engines and fuel tanker trucks. Used in water transport (marine and river), industrial systems (fuel supply for generator sets), fuel trucks with large tanks. The range of fuel flow measurement is 0.72-25 m3/h and above. The measurement error is ±0.1-0.5%.
